“Whenever I dip my paintbrush into a nice colour, I get my own little party started,” Sieb Posthuma (1960-2014) said. For many years, he was one of the leading and most versatile illustrators of the Netherlands.
His work stands out in originality, expressivity, ambience and humour. His drawings burst off the paper. “If there’s something that could be said to define my style, it’s diversity. That applies to materials and techniques, but also to my palette. Every assignment, whether it’s a theatre decor or a picture book, requires its own visual language.”
Five years after his death, the Children’s Books Museum pays a tribute to the illustrator and writer, known for e.g. Rintje and Aadje Piraatje. With more than 50 original pieces of artwork, Sieb Posthuma – In the picture exhibits some highlights from Posthuma’s comprehensive oeuvre. From his debut and his best-known titles to the Gouden Penseel award-winning Boven in een groen linde zat een moddervette haan and the illustrations he made for Mannetje Jas, inspired by his great love Ton Meyer.
Please note that this exhibition is not offered in English – however, knowledge of Dutch is not required for you to enjoy it.
Sieb Posthuma – In the picture can be seen from 6 July until 27 October.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the museum devotes the Zomertekenschool to Sieb Posthuma.
